The environment in particular is coming under increasing pressure. The developed world is starting to change but the pace is slow. In any case the slowing pace of environmental degradation in the affluent countries is more than compensated for by increasing environmental load from the emerging nations. The world system is under threat. It is therefore becoming urgent that the developed world increases the pace of change, in order to prove that a sustainable society is feasible and to demonstrate an alternative example to the world.
Business has a prime role to play in implementing this transformation in society. Improving Corporate Social responsibility (CSR) is a start, but in many cases this is little more than a public relations exercise. Business must move beyond these beginnings to make fundamental changes to business models and processes. This is clearly the responsible action to take, but Susta understands that being responsible is not enough.
We believe in identifying the profitable opportunities that arise and taking action compatible with increasing long-term shareholder value. This may not be what green campaigners want to hear, but when they see what can be delivered their complaints will be muted.
It is in the long-term commercial interests of business to get involved in shaping a future sustainable society and making the strategic choices now to exploit the coming revolution. The future will be a step-change, and the outcome in many areas is not obvious. The companies that fail to develop a green business strategy will suffer. Those who make plans now will be poised for a period of sustainable profits, as they build a sustainable world.
Susta brought new ideas to sustainability when it was founded in 2004 and continues to work at the leading edge of policy formulation and strategic planning to deliver a prosperous and sustainable society.
